Charles J. Hastings, DPM, FACFAS

Passion and the pursuit of excellence are the driving forces behind all that Dr. Charles J. Hastings does for his patients. An Ohio native, Dr. Hastings attended medical school at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his surgical residency/clinical fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard. He moved to Virginia as a co-founding partner and surgeon at the McKenzie-Hastings Institute for Foot & Ankle Surgery, which opened its doors in 2005. Dr. Hastings’ commitment to treating the patient as a whole, rather than a sum of mere parts, is what sets him apart from other medical professionals. When faced with foot and ankle issues, Dr. Hastings believes that patient education is as important as the course of treatment. Accredited in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Hastings has subspecialties including diabetic prevention, sports medicine, limb salvage and reconstruction, pediatrics, and congenital limb deformity correction.

As a founding partner at the McKenzie-Hastings Institute for Foot & Ankle Surgery, which is located on Bridge Road in Suffolk near Harbour View, Dr. Hastings counsels his patients on preventive strategies and proper foot care, to ensure overall health and limb preservation, especially in diabetic patients. The goal of his conservative and surgical care is to treat not only the foot and ankle, but enhance patients’ understanding of their condition and prevention of future issues. Under Dr. Hastings’ care, a patient’s quality of life can greatly improve as the goal is to treat ahead of the curve, rather than behind it. His team’s main goal is to keep his patients in their sport, and their active life. As a physician with numerous professional memberships, including being a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Dr. Hastings’ vast experience guides his treatment plans for individual patient care.

When not treating his local patients, Dr. Hastings spends a part of each year dedicated to medical and surgical missions around the world, treating those with life-altering foot and ankle injuries or birth defects. He has traveled to numerous countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Senegal, Honduras, Mexico, Dominical Republic, Russia, Costa Rica, and others, giving a new beginning to patients who otherwise might not be able to participate in a normal life. His other passions include life-long fitness, where he is a founding partner and a coach at Defined Athletics, home of CrossFit Slice in Portsmouth/Churchland/Western Branch, and his twin Labrador retrievers, Dakota and Montana.
